Hating your body won’t make you thin, and being thin won’t make you stop hating your body.
People choose to lose weight for many reasons, but they consistently report that weight loss didn’t make them happy. (In fact, body shame has been correlated with weight gain, and most people will gain that weight back anyhow.)
If you’re not happy now, you won’t be happy 10 or 20 or 100 pounds lighter. You won’t instantly become more glamorous, or stylish, or athletic.
Losing weight won’t fulfill the fantasy of being thin.
It sucks a lot to realize that even if you’re in the 5% of people for whom diets work, just losing weight won’t make your life better. We’ve been taught that fantasy all our lives, and it’s okay to struggle with letting it go. But once you do, you can start building that life right now.
You don’t have to wait. You can start taking surfing lessons or wearing leggings or standing up to the people who tear you down right this very minute. Your life is too precious to waste on a fantasy. Go make it yours instead.
